AI & Creative Technology
Transparency matters when technology touches creativity.
Artifact recognizes that AI tools are becoming part of the modern creative landscape. Our policy is built around transparency, education, respect for human creators, and clear boundaries.
Our approach to AI.
Artifact does not ignore AI, and we do not treat AI-generated output as equivalent to human-created artwork. Instead, we recognize that creative technology can be used responsibly in some contexts while still requiring honesty and clear limits.
The goal of Artifact’s AI policy is not to shame curiosity or learning. The goal is to protect trust, prevent misrepresentation, and ensure artists and commissioners understand what they are seeing or purchasing.
How AI may be used.
Artifact allows limited AI use when it supports learning, exploration, or early-stage creative development.
Study
AI may be used to examine ideas, techniques, workflows, or visual concepts for learning purposes.
Reference
AI-generated material may be used as reference or inspiration, not as a substitute for original work.
Concepting
AI may help explore early ideas, compositions, themes, or creative direction before original creation begins.
Learning Streams
AI workflows may be streamed only in educational or learning-focused contexts where permitted.
AI may assist ideas, but honesty protects trust.
What is not allowed.
Artifact does not allow AI-generated content to replace human creative work within our marketplace or verification systems.
Allowed uses include...
- Clearly labeled AI-generated content
- Study, reference, or concept exploration
- Educational discussion of AI workflows
- Learning-focused demonstrations where appropriate
Not allowed uses include...
- Selling AI-generated artwork as a commission
- Trading AI-generated artwork as human-created work
- Using AI-generated images for Artisan verification
- Claiming AI-generated output as original handmade work
Why labeling matters.
Members deserve to understand whether a work was created by a human artist, generated by AI, or assisted by AI tools.
Disclosure
AI-generated content must be clearly identified so members know what they are viewing.
Respect for Artists
Human creators deserve recognition for skill, effort, craftsmanship, and original creative labor.
Commission Trust
Commissioners deserve clarity about what they are buying, how it was made, and what rights may apply.
Community Integrity
Transparency helps prevent deception and protects Artifact’s creative marketplace.
Artisan verification and AI.
AI-generated artwork cannot be used to obtain Artisan verification within Artifact.
Artisan verification exists to recognize human creative skill, craftsmanship, professionalism, and portfolio work. Attempting to use AI-generated content as proof of human-created work violates the purpose of the verification system.
Creative technology will keep changing.
Artifact understands that tools evolve. Digital art, 3D modeling, filters, photo manipulation, automation, and AI-assisted workflows can all raise complicated questions about authorship and transparency.
Our approach will continue to prioritize honesty, respect for creators, informed commissioners, and policies that support a healthy creative community.
