Voice & Recording
Conversations deserve respect.
Artifact treats voice conversations as private community spaces. Our voice and recording policy exists to protect trust, consent, comfort, and the privacy of members who choose to speak with one another.
Why this policy exists.
Voice chats are where people relax, socialize, collaborate, and speak more naturally than they might in text. Members should not have to wonder whether a casual conversation is being secretly recorded, uploaded, or monetized.
Artifact’s voice policy is built around a simple expectation: if recording or streaming is happening, people should know about it before they participate.
Voice channels are private spaces.
Artifact may be a publicly accessible community, but member voice channels are treated as private conversations among the people present.
Private by Default
Members should assume voice conversations are private unless recording or streaming is clearly announced.
Notice Matters
If recording or streaming is happening, participants should be told before they continue participating.
Consent & Comfort
If someone is uncomfortable being recorded, the situation should be handled respectfully and without pressure.
A voice channel is not a stage unless everyone knows the curtain is open.
Recording and streaming expectations.
Artifact is not trying to stop members from creating, streaming, or teaching. We are setting expectations so people can make informed choices.
Acceptable with notice
- Streaming your own artwork or creative process
- Recording yourself for educational or creative purposes
- Sharing a live creative demonstration when participants are informed
- Reminding new voice participants that recording or streaming is active
Not acceptable
- Secretly recording voice conversations
- Uploading private conversations without consent
- Using member voices or presence for monetized content without consent
- Recording to harass, embarrass, threaten, or manipulate others
When someone is uncomfortable.
If a member is uncomfortable being recorded or appearing in a stream, that concern should be respected. Depending on the situation, recording may stop, the streamer may move, or the uncomfortable member may choose to mute, deafen, or join another voice channel.
The goal is not to create conflict. The goal is to make sure people understand when they are being recorded and have a reasonable choice about participating.
Exceptions for safety.
Artifact recognizes that rare emergency situations may require different judgment.
Immediate Danger
Life-threatening situations or urgent safety concerns may require members to preserve evidence.
Threats
Threats against community members may justify preserving information needed for staff or safety review.
Report Concerns
If recording becomes necessary for safety reasons, members should report the situation to Artifact staff as soon as possible.
Commercial use and public posting.
Recording members without their knowledge or consent and then using that audio or video for monetized videos, advertisements, social media content, recreation, or other public distribution creates serious privacy and consent concerns.
Artifact does not grant permission to commercially use another member’s voice, likeness, username, or presence. Members remain responsible for following the privacy, publicity, and recording laws that apply where they live.
Enforcement.
Secret recording, recording for harassment, or continuing to record after being told to stop may result in moderation action, including removal from the community when appropriate.
Severe violations may also be reported to Discord Trust & Safety depending on the nature of the conduct.
